Did you know?

During the 18th and 19th centuries, pineapples were a luxury item and were incredibly expensive. In the 1700s a single fruit cost the equivalent of £5,000 today! They were so sought after that it was possible to hire one for the evening and display it to guests as a symbol of wealth and good taste. At Hillsborough Castle is one of the earliest surviving pineries in Ireland, dating from the 1770s. By growing their own, the castle always had a fresh supply of pineapples with which to impress!
