The museum itself covers approximately 12.5 acres of land with 145 galleries. The V&A collection includes roughly 4.5 million objects spanning 5,000 years of art from ancient times to the modern era. The V&A has the earliest photograph of London – looking down Whitehall from Trafalgar Square (before Nelson's Column was built), it is a daguerreotype taken by a M. de St Croix in 1839.
